Barb grew up in Harford City MD, starting to ride at age 10 with a local stable, where she dabbled in 4H and local hunter shows.  During her youth she worked in the stable on Saturdays in order to earn her afternoon group lesson.  Upon high school graduation, she worked for Sylvia Hector’s hunter/jumper barn and another lesson stable before starting college as a Biology major.

Riding took a bit of a back seat during college at Towson University, where she majored in Pre-Med/Biology.  During this time, Barb did manage to gallop thoroughbreds for a race trainer when her studies allowed.  In 1988, during her last year of college, she bought an OTTB and began her career in 3 day eventing.

Barb moved to Pennsylvania in 1989, taking a job at New Bolton Center as a surgical nurse.  She was in this position for 3 years, before transferring to the Sport Medicine Department in 1992.   She remained in that role for 6 years, where Barb operating the treadmill and assisting in endoscopy and echo-cardiography.

Barb also worked her way up the eventing ladder with different horses throughout the years.  She competed through the Intermediate level of eventing with a wonderful thoroughbred gelding named Showbiz, who was later sold and moved up to Advanced.

Barb met Roddy while working at New Bolton Center in 1998, and they married within the year.   They moved to Montgomery County MD, where Roddy start his job with a cutting horse trainer.  Barb spent the next year and half helping Roddy develop his business while she worked full time at the Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center as a surgical nurse and head of central supply.

After starting their own training business and family, the Strangs decided to move back to Chester County, PA to continue their business and to raise their children.  In 2004, they purchased land across the line in Lancaster County, where they built their own home and facility, Sport Horse Training Inc.

Barb has trained with many well know equestrians such as Sharon Best,  Jessica Ransehousen, Susan O'Connor, Packy McGowan Scott Hassler,
Belinda Nairn and Molly Rosin.   She currently trains with Adrienne Iorio and Richard Lamb.  Competition days for Barb were put on hold to raise her family and assist in running the business, but starting youngsters in the hunt field and whipping-in for Andrews Bridge Foxhounds has become her passion.

Today Sport Horse Training Inc. is a family affair with the their kids, Raleigh and Payton, who help with farm chores as well!
